In my researching for background advice on traveling, I have had the wonderful good fortune to come across a wonderful website! It's generally geared to women travelers, but men also subscribe to the site due to all the great travel advice and inside tips...everything from what to pack for a myriad of travel destinations to actual places to eat/to stay/to see that may be off the 'tourist path' (read: cheaper/pricing geared to the locals/tips on what to say and when to say it). You may be staying stateside or traveling overseas, either way...this site is fantastic!
